The blue hologram motions towards Voidarix, energy crackling around its hand, “Shall I terminate him, sir?”
“No. In fact, let him go,” Zurakia replied calmly.
“Let him go? But-”
“Computer,” he interrupted, growling, “When it comes to revenge, the most efficient way is not always the most enjoyable, not that you’d understand that. Now, release him!”
Sighing, the computer lowered its hand, the energy around it dissipating into the air, “You’re right, sir, I don’t. But if you insist…”
Spontaneously, the blue electricity coursing through Voidarix’s veins vanished, the now free Makuta falling forward with a yelp. After slamming into the keyboard he had been hovering above moments earlier, he shakily steadied himself on his forearms. Slowly, he took in his surroundings, his gaze moving from the hologram to the wrecked surroundings to… Zurakia standing over Deviox’s corpse; Voidarix’s heart skipped a beat.
“Wha-” Voidarix gasped, scrabbling backwards until his back hit a wall. His wide eyes met the lifeless gaze of the small Glatorian, a desperate plea for help that would never come.
“What’s the matter?” Zurakia sarcastically condoled, “Scared of your own boss? Oh, you weren’t last time. In fact, you were so unintimidated by me that you killed me.”
He paused for a moment, chuckling, “Well, tried to, at least. Just like Deviox, you could never do anything flawlessly. An even more embarrassing failure for you, seeing as my consciousness was at your fingertips this entire time, just ready to be deleted.”
Zurakia’s voice triggered something deep within Voidarix- something he had repressed for almost a year. A face flashed before his eyes- his own, but distorted by an unnaturally wide smile and eyes that constantly trembled in anticipation- then disappeared as quickly as it had appeared. Even as the after-image faded, he fell to the floor, cradling his head in his hands. Memories flooded his mind, one after another, as his entire life replayed itself in supersonic speed. In the span of a few seconds, he relived his brain deteriorating into mush over and over, the feeling of having his soul taken out and replaced with something else. An insane cackle ripped through his mind, echoing eternally throughout the never-ending torrent of memories.
“No… please!” he whispered hoarsely.
“So, what changed, huh!?” Zurakia continued, Voidarix’s outburst only spurring him to raise his voice even louder, “Where’s all that bravado now!? Oh, was it only because I was half-dead that you had guts!? It seems that cowards only show courage when the playing-field is tipped in their favor! Level it and they run away and hide like children!”
Voidarix lay on the ground, shuddering as wave after wave of memories bombarded him. Using every ounce of willpower he possessed, he forced them into the recesses of his mind, his AI- or, not his AI, not anymore- keeping them under lock and key. After what felt like hours, he shakily got to his feet, glaring at Zurakia with unrepressed hatred. His voice quivering, he quietly replied, “Consider it payback for turning my life into a living karz for millennia.”
Taking a deep breath, he straightened his back, his fists clenching. His voice suddenly level, loud, and filled with malice, he added, “I don’t care what I had to do- You deserved to die. You still do, and I’m prepared to do anything to make that a reality again. If that somehow makes me a coward, so be it!”
Zurakia laughed, a booming howl that shook the room, “Aw look, the little Makuta actually thinks he can kill me! Just like little Deviox did before I decapitated him! I guess that’s why no one ever challenges me fairly- they know deep down that they’ll lose!”
Voidarix began to shake, his gaze averting to the ground where Deviox’s body lay. However, this time it was not from fear, but from anger. Energy swirled around him, whipping up shards of glass and rubble, as lightning splayed outwards from his hands. With a hiss, all the panels of armor adorning his chest detached and played outwards, the steam reacting quite violently with the electricity in the air.
In response, Zurakia simply cocked his head to the side. Otherwise, he stood completely still, the entourage of power simply sending the tubes adorning his back into a slight quiver as if in a breeze. A sneer planted itself on his face, accompanied by a singular eyebrow raising slightly. Calmly, he muttered, “Seems I’ve struck a nerve.”
“YOU’RE GOING TO DIE, ZURAKIA!” Voidarix screamed, unleashing a torrent of energy straight at the towering figure.
“No. In fact, let him go,” Zurakia replied calmly.
