Far away from New Atero, in the ruins of a once-great arena, a large tent housed a beast. It scrambled around in the tent, looking at drawings and scribbles and listening to them whisper their words to it. Playful, impatient, excited, sad. All of the blueprints wanted attention. They wanted to be made real.
The beast had learned to ignore them. It threw papers aside, causing them to scream at it in rage and sorrow. It found the one it wanted. This one spoke differently. It spoke of duty. The beast’s master had ordered it to build this blueprint, and it must obey. It was a weapon to slay the gods.
The beast lumbered to its workplace, a long table covered in parts and half-built contraptions. It grabbed tools, gathered supplies and worked machinery with its many limbs, working hard as it growled to itself and argued with the other blueprints scattered everywhere. It tried and failed, growling and howling to itself as it made adjustments and started over again.
Another failed attempt, and another howl.
Except this time it’s howl was accompanied by another. Not a howl of frustration; the howl of a predator finding prey. The beast had come to know it well. This was not another beast, but a monster that stalked the beast day and night. The beast grabbed its weapons and turned to face the entrance to the tent, glaring at it and waiting for the predator to enter as the entrance warped itself, seeming to be right in the beast’s face one moment and far away the next. He saw it standing outside of the door a short distance away, a hideous black canine Rahi. Its head was lowered, its sawblade teeth grinding and growling, as a pair of terrible red eyes flared out of its skull. Tracers seemed to leap off of its body.
The beast was frozen with fear. The monster stood closer than it had ever come before. Its eyes were so close the best could see patterns in them. They burned with unholy fire.
The monster started pulsating with red light as it leapt at the beast, ready to kill; the rest of the world came rushing up behind it. The beast screeched in terror as it fell over, all of its fight gone as it anticipated death. But the monster only made it about a bio before it vanished in a flash of red light.
The beast was left alone. No voices spoke to it. It shook with primal fear and fury, despite being mostly robotic. It didn’t know how long it had until the monster decided to finally go for the kill. A storm was brewing. A reckoning would come soon...
The beast could feel it.
